19th Annual Short Track Nationals
10/27-10/28/06
If you click on the video links below, please be patient; to do this on the web at a
decent resolution, the file sizes are large. Unless you have at least DSL, don't try to
open them, as you will be waiting for quite a while for it to open. They are QuickTime
media files, and if you need a free copy of the software, just download it at
www.quicktime.com (it's free).

The opening night of the 19th Annual Short Track Nationals kicked off on Friday night
with 99 sprint cars in the pits. It was an action filled night and here are some of the
highlights.  The track workers had their hands full getting the track and the pits
whipped into shape. But they were still able to get both ready for action on time.
The following picture was indicative of how the night was going to be. This is
Nebraska's Jack Dover, who went for a wild ride after popping a gigantic wheelie.
I realized after I
looked at this picture
that Dale Blaney was
in it, second from
left. He would end up
having a really
strong performance,
but engine problems
would take him out
of the running in the
championship
feature.
Saturday morning kicked off the daytime qualifying round, brought on by the rainy
weather earlier in the week. Several drivers had fine runs on the tricky surface and
here are some highlights.
Here's California's Steven Tiner leading Tennessee's Mike Ward in heat race action.
A different view of the track from the turn 1-2 pit grandstands. If you sat here all
weekend you saw plenty of action...

Each year I try to have a client & friend get-together, and this year it made sense to
have it at the STN. The following are some pictures of the event.

I'd like to thank the 100+ people that turned out for the DarinShort.com party and a
good time was had by all. I'd also like to thank Tracey Clay and the
I-30 Speedway staff,
and
Crestone Group Baking Company for their part in helping with the event.

And congratulations to Mitch Runge of Sioux Falls, SD and Mike Sanders of N. Richland
Hills, TX for each winning a grand prize drawing of a three day pass for two to the 2007
Short Track Nationals - which by the way will pay the winner $20,000.
Crestone Group Baking Companies  produces fresh-baked pastries and desserts that
can be found at over 1,600 Starbucks locations in the U.S., as well as Corner Bakery. On
this particular day, you could also find their product at this party! Special thanks to
them for providing over 300 tasty treats for the event!
Here's 1/2 of the voice behind the AmericanDirtNetwork.com, HotRod. Special thanks to
ADN for covering the STN for the first time this year.
And Knoxville seasoned veteran Larry Pinegar stopped by to catch up on current events
and get revitilized before the Saturday night show.
Here's Wayne talking with Kent Lewis Jr's. sister, Carol, at the party.
Here's the DarinShort.com sponsored car of Wayne Brown (cwb15.com). Wayne helped
me all weekend getting the display set up (and tore down...) and keeping everything at
the party running smoothly. Thanks for all of your help Wayne!
Maxim Chassis' Brad Aylesworth came down for the first time to the STN to help service
the 40+ cars they had in the field. Brad and I used to work together at Maxim in the 90's.
Thanks again to everyone that came to the party. I'd also like to thank Sam Hafertepe Jr.
and family (
Sam15.com),  and Kevin Ramey for being a part of the event.

I know I'm going to forget some of the names of  the other drivers that came to the party,
but here are the ones that I'm aware of who attended:

Jeff Mitrisin (IA), Pete Butler (AR) & car owner
Rodd Hanna (TX), Sean McClelland (OK),
Eric Lutz  & family (SD), Joe Beaver's gang (IA), Rick & Zack Pringle (AR), Cody Gardner
(AR), Joe Young (AR),  Mitch Runge (SD), Mike Sanders (TX) and Jason Johnson's 'The
Shop' Crew, who I'm convinced got their energy and strength to pull off the STN win from
the BBQ they had at the party!

And thanks for taking the time to stop by on a super busy day at I-30 Speedway.

Now, back to the racing - the party's over! Here's Dale Blaney and Darren Stewart.
