Oskapaloosa - Knoxville - English Creek - Iowa State Fair
8/8 - 8/12/06
Just for fun, the following are some pictures and video clips from our trip to the
Ultimate Stand For $30 Grand at Oskaloosa, the 46th running of the Knoxville
Nationals, the Caged Outlaw Kart Nationals at English Creek Speedway and the
Iowa State Fair stock car/modified special held the morning of the Nationals.
We kicked things off with 'Oskapaloosa' on Tuesday night with the non-winged
sprint cars. The track was super fast, as there was rain earlier in the day and
cool temps; making for some intense racing. There was definitely a party
atmosphere at the race. Including 'boxing round' style sign boards signifying
which race was up next. It was a wild night of racing, with lots of passing. Jerry
Coons, Jr. started the feature 9th and picked up the $30K.
If you click on the video links below, please be patient; to do this on the web
at a decent resolution, the file sizes are large. Unless you have at least DSL,
don't try to open them, as you will be waiting for quite a while for it to open.
They are QuickTime media files unless otherwise noted, and if you need a
free copy of the software, just download it at www.quicktime.com (it's free).

Start Of Osky A-Feature. This Windows Media Player clip is 26MB, so it
will take a while to load - be patient! Work on something else while it
downloads if you have a slow speed connection. You can also replay
after it is finished. FYI: It took about 4 minutes to load on my office
DSL connection.
English Creek Speedway is just south of Knoxville a few miles, and let me start
by saying: IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA - YOU'VE GOT TO CHECK THIS PLACE OUT! It's an
awesome facility, well run show with lots of passing and side by side racing.
There were 80+ entries from CA-ID-MT-IA-MO-KS-NE to name a few when we
were there. The video clips below take a while to upload, but they are worth
the time to check the place out. Oh, and it was a whopping $5 to get in.
The track also gets the 'most unique stair steps to a flag stand' award.
One of the young racers gets hung up on the track berm.
Above, heat race action. Below, a young racer limps back to the pits after a
skirmish on the front stretch.

Feature race action at English Creek, 20 drivers take the green.
This clip shows how good the racing surface is - especially
considering it was a day race.

The Iowa State Fair normally has a day race the Saturday of the Knoxville
Finale. The Fair voted #1 by USA Today has lots to do and see, and the race was
good entertainment for a 10AM start time.
Here's a shot of what we used to call the 'Battledome' at the Fairgrounds. For
many years during the winter this was the indoor home of racing in the Des
Moines area featuring karts, motorcycles, caged mini-sprints and such. The
nickname speaks for itself, as the action was pretty intense.
It was a weird weather week in Iowa. Lots of rain in the overnight hours, which
must have made track prep a real challenge. But the track was smooth and
fast all week long.

Here's an attempt at a panoramic of the track, if you click on the picture, it will
open it up bigger.
Tribute poster to Jesse Hockett's crew chief, Daniel McMillin. We had a lot of
fun with these two throughout the weekend. Jesse would make it into the C
feature on the finale night.
The Mopar sprint video games were a real popular choice with fans. Here's the
Rick Ferkel car.
SPEED TV interviewed several drivers, which was also on the TV screen and PA
system throughout the finale night.

As you probably know, there was lots of 'action' on finale night, but here are
some other video highlights. These are from the stands, so you're right in the
middle of the action:

Part of what makes Southern Iowa Speedweek much fun, is the fact that it's
not just about the Knoxville Nationals. There are plenty of things to do in
addition to the races there.
